The water-cement ratio is a very important factor in a concrete mixture and concrete design. This ratio varies from 0.4 to 0.7. The water-cement ratio is a very important factor as the workability and strength of the design concrete solely depend on it. Hence, it is the factors that determine the strength and workability of any design concrete.

Effect of Water-cement Ratio.

The effect of the water-cement ratio comes in two ways. It is either high or low. When the water-cement ratio is high, it has its effects on the properties of the concrete been produced. When the water-cement ratio is low, it also has its own effects on the concrete been produced. In whichever way, these effects of high and low water-cement ratio may be either positive on some of the concrete properties or negative or negative on some of the concrete properties.

Low Water-cement Ratio.

A low water-cement ratio from practice produces a concrete of high strength but low workability. A concrete is said to be workable if it can easily handle, placed and transported without any segregation of the concrete constituent. When the water-cement ratio which is the amount of water needed to mix a particular batch of concrete is low, it makes the mixing process difficult. This also will allow easy evaporation of the water content leading to quick setting and solidification of the concrete. This, in turn, makes the concrete to gain a huge strength. This implies that a lower water-cement gives a concrete with high strength with a lower workability.

High Water-cement Ratio.

The greater the amount of water (water-cement ratio) in a concrete mix, the more dilute the cement past will become. When this happened, the following properties of concrete will be greatly affected.

  • Compressive strength
  • Flexural strength
  • Porosity of concrete
  • Shrinkage
  • The colour

Another important of the water-cement ratio is the binding power or force of all concrete constituent together.
