It is worthy of note that, from the list of Presidents/Head of state in Nigeria above, the first head of state of Nigeria was a monarch. After the last colonial ruler called Sir James Robertson (1958- 1960) came the monarch called Queen of Nigeria, Elizabeth II who was represented by Governor-general Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
Military Rule and Republics.
The Nigeria leadership has undergone four consecutive republics between 1963 till present date. Under these republics, the first, second and third republic was purely military rule while the fourth is civilian rule embracing democracy.
Non-Military That Rule Nigeria in the First and Third Republic.
It is worthy of note that, during the first and third republic which is purely military rule, two civilians emerge as president. The first civilian was Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari (1979 – 1983) who came into power through an election and was handed over to by a military government under the regime of Ger. Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Matthew Obasanjo. This event took place in the second republic of Nigeria.
The second person was Chief Earnest Oladeinde Shoneka (26 August 1993 – 17 November 1993) who came into power by appointment by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida. The civilian rule takes its full force in the fourth republic which begging with Gen (Rrd) Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Matthew Obasanjo.

From the list of leaders above, there are seventeen leaders. However, president Mohammadu Buhari occupies the 15th position in the Nigeria leadership position. Furthermore, many of the leaders, assume the seat twice. Examples of such persons are, Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan and Buhari himself.
